- What is WunderDict?
- A free web app for learning German vocabulary. You look up words in German or English, save them into your own lists, and practise them with quick quizzes and flash cards. It is built for English speakers at any level, A1 through C2.
- Is it really free?
- Yes. Building lists, looking up words, and every practice mode are free to use.
- Do I need an account?
- Not to start. Guest mode lets you search words and build lists right away. To unlock the quizzes, flash cards, and your progress history, you sign in with a free account (email or Google), which is how your work and streak get saved.
- How do I add words?
- Type in the search bar and hit submit. The word is sorted by part of speech and added to your active list, with its details filled in automatically. Autocomplete also suggests words already in your library as you type.
- Can I search in English?
- Yes. Search in German or English; WunderDict works out which word you mean and gives you the German entry either way.
- How does the app fill in articles, plurals, and examples?
- A fast three-tier lookup does it. It pulls translation, article (der/die/das), plural, CEFR level, conjugations, and example sentences automatically, and entries get richer each time you search them.
- What practice modes are there?
- Four. Translation Quiz (correct/incorrect rounds that build your streak), Flash Cards (low-pressure, exposure-only review), Der/Die/Das (a 2-choice gender drill), and Plural Master (a 2-choice plural drill).
- How do the Der/Die/Das and Plural Master drills work?
- Each shows you a noun and two buttons. For Der/Die/Das you pick the article; for Plural Master you pick the plural. They are quick timed rounds (about ten seconds each) so you answer on instinct and get through a lot of reps fast, which is exactly how these patterns sink in.
- What is spaced repetition, and how does the app decide what to show me?
- Spaced repetition means reviewing a word just before you would forget it, then widening the gap as it sticks. The practice engine tracks your words in three buckets (new, learning, due), prioritises the ones you have drilled least and the ones due for review, and spaces out words you already know so you spend your time where it helps most.
- What are flash cards for, versus the quizzes?
- Flash cards are exposure-only: flip, see the answer, move on, with no scoring. Quizzes test you and keep score, building your streak and moving words toward known. Use flash cards to review without pressure, and quizzes when you want recall under a bit of challenge.
- Can I add my own example sentences?
- Yes. Add your own sentences to a list and the app can translate them and pull the individual words out into proper lookups. It is a good way to capture vocabulary in the context where you actually met it.
- Can I share a list?
- Yes. You can share any list you have built. You can also rename, favourite, and delete your lists.
- How do I track my progress?
- The Progress dashboard shows your total words, words known, accuracy, current streak, a year-long activity heatmap, and mastery for each list. It updates as you practise.
- Can I use it on my phone?
- WunderDict runs in any modern browser, so it works on your phone the same way it works on your laptop. There is nothing to install.
- What languages does it support?
- German vocabulary, with English meanings. It is built specifically for English speakers learning German, so the grammar details (articles, plurals, conjugations, CEFR levels) are tuned for that.
- How is my data handled?
